Likely to discuss the situation toward the end of the race Saturday night in Richmond, vis-à-vis Michael Waltrip Racing an the Clint Bowyer spin. Dun-dun dunnn...
Starting popcorn at 8:05.
UPDATE: According to Jenna Fryer, Ryan Newman has been placed into the Chase for the Sprint Cup and Martin Truex, Jr. has been removed. Michael Waltrip Racing is fined $300,000, all three MWR drivers are docked 50 points each and MWR Director Ty Norris is suspended indefinitely.
That's going to itch come winter.

what exactly happened?

The short answer is shenanigans.
The longer answer is that as the race played out Saturday night, certain things had to happen to ensure that Martin Truex, Jr. made it into the Chase, including drivers needing to finish in front of (or behind, depending on your perspective). The biggest stinker was a late spin by Clint Bowyer (who was already in The Chase), which brought out the caution and allowed Truex, Jr. to finish far enough in front of Ryan Newman to knock him out of the Chase.
There was something else that occurred involving Brian Vickers driving really slow on a couple of laps to allow Joey Logano to finish well enough Saturday night, qualifying for the Chase at the expense of Jeff Gordon.
As I said, shenanigans.

Ryan Newman was leading the race and poised to win with less than 10 laps to go, which would have given Newman the wild card spot in the Chase (read: playoffs), and cause MWR driver Martin Truex Jr to just miss the Chase. Team owner Michael Waltrip got on the radio to Truex's teammate, Clint Bowyer and said to Clint "Are your arms getting tired?" Clint spun on his own for no apparent reason coming out of the very next corner. This brought out a caution flag. On the restart Newman got passed, losing the lead and missing the Chase by a single point, Truex getting the spot. That's about the gist of it.

sounds nuts........... the CHase is such a dumb concept anyway..........
I don't really understand why all pro sports in the USA feel the urge to have playoffs....It's already dumb enough that the MLS is the laughingstock of world soccer that they had to institute a playoff system a few years back

It is all about the casual fan, and how you can pander to them. Ultimately this is NASCAR's fault really by setting up a system that allows these things to matter.
